TRUST LAUNCHES TO BENEFIT COMMUNITIES

The Kathu Solar Community Trust (KSCT) launched in two Gamagara Local Municipality towns, Babatas and Mapoteng, welcomed Mayor Edwin Ophaketse Hantise, Municipal officials, Trustees and community members amongst others to the events. The occasion marked the official unveiling of this Community Trust, which has been established for the primary purpose of realising broad-based socio-economic development and empowerment of these beneficiary communities in addition to Kathu, Olifantshoek, Siyathemba and Debeng.

The chair of the Trust, Mr Joe Jongolo, Independent Trustee, explained the purpose of this community body, “The Kathu Solar Community Trust is a community vehicle that is to participate in the renewable energy space. The Trust allows the surrounding communities to actively benefit in the commercial gains of REISA solar, which will create wealth and thereby become a source of poverty alleviation.”

Over the next five years, the Trust has plans to support and target parents through households and schools, with the help of a social worker; Support values-driven dialogues and workshops; Establish a new rehabilitation centre; Empower families to deal with drug-addicted members; Support early childhood development initiatives; as well as Adult Basic Education & Training amongst other programmes.

Having officially registered late 2017, Kathu Solar Community Trust is a 2.5% shareholder in REISA solar (Renewable Energy Investments SA (RF) Pty Ltd), a 75MW solar plant located in the Northern Cape Province near Deben and Kathu. The Trust’s beneficiary communities include residents of Babatas, Mapoteng, Kathu, Olifantshoek, Siyathemba and Debeng.

In addition to the five Independent Trustees, the KSCT has already appointed five Trustees from the beneficiary communities to govern this community body.
