Renewable Energy Investments SA (RF) Pty Ltd is owned by Old Mutual, various funds managed by African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), Builtafrica Kathu Pty Ltd and the Local Community Trust.
The solar field comprises 343 200 solar modules manufactured in China and supplied by Jinko, and has an installed capacity of 75 MW.
It is situated in the Gamagara Municipality 4km south east of Deben and 17 km north west of Kathu in the Northern Cape, and spans 210 hectares.
REISA received Environmental Authorisation on February 2012.
Construction of the solar field commenced in November 2012.
Commercial Operation Date was achieved in August 2014.
REISA Management Company managed the Project Construction Process, and manages the Operation & Maintenance of the solar field with an operations contractor.
The solar field is connected to the Eskom’s Fox switching station which is adjacent to the field.
It generates approximately 179 000 MWh/year of clean, renewable energy to the national grid, addressing the ongoing and increasing need for electricity in South Africa.
The solar field produces enough green electricity to supply approximately 73 000 medium-sized South African homes, and in so doing avoids approximately 125 000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year when compared to traditional fossil fuel power fields.
REISA positively impacts the communities in the Gamagara Municipal area, including Kathu, Oliphantshoek, Dibeng, Dingleton, Babatas and Mapoteng.
