GAMAGARA MUNICIPALITY DRAWS A COLLECTIVE APPROACH

Co-ordinated efforts, led by Gamagara Local Municipality stakeholders, has resulted in a collective social impact that has provided disaster relief to 864 households, 43 local clinics and 2 hospitals.

Various social investment stakeholders together with the Gamagara Local Municipality Mayor, Edwin Hantise, and the Municipality Manager, Protea Leserwane, are collaborating to put responsive COVID-19 measures in place, to adequately support communities during these challenging times. The essential services plan, which is being rendered, has been informed by a number of inputs from various stakeholders within the jurisdiction. It includes Emergency Services, Humanitarian Relief, Environmental Control and Refuse Removal as well.

Some of the critical interventions include the supply of 10 000L water tanks, protective gear as well as the provision of food and hygiene parcels for community members.

Identified humanitarian gaps include the provision of emergency water to informal settlements; Shelter for Homeless; Food Hampers to indigent households and meals at a Soup Kitchen; a Quarantine Area; a local testing centre; health equipment and hygiene implements.

Economic development investors working together with the Municipality include Kathu Solar Park, REISA solar plant, Sishen Solar, Kumba Iron Ore, Assmang Mine and SIOC Community Development Trust (Kathu) have pledged their commitment towards social relief and humanitarian initiatives to assist community members.

“At a time like this, it is important that vulnerable groups such as the homeless and orphans; child headed families; as well as indigent households are prioritised and don’t fall through the crack,” said Kele Mogorosi, Local Community Liaison Officer for REISA Solar Farm.
